QCINEMA : 2013 QUEZON CITY FILM FESTIVAL

qcinema

QCinema, Quezon City‘s annual Film Festival, is aimed at addressing the development and promotion of filmmaking among city residents.  The three selected films, after a rigorous screening process, were awarded production grants of P800,000 each by the Quezon City Film Development Commission (QCFDC).  Part of the grant’s requirements is that one of its three major proponents (director, producer or screenwriter) must be a bonafide Quezon City resident.

QCinema will be held from October 3 to 5, 2013 at the Ayala Trinoma Mall.  The three winning projects which will be holding their world premieres are “Gaydar” by Alvin Yapan, “Hello World” by Joel Ferrer and “Lukas Nino” by John Torres (awarded P500,000 postproduction grant).

Included in the QCinema event will be the screening of nine 2013 Cinemalaya New Breed films which were awarded by QCFDC with postproduction grants of P100,000 each.  Slated during the festival will be film workshops and talkback sessions with filmmakers as well as the awarding of special recognition to the three winners and grantees.

JASMINE CURTIS-SMITH : The STAR Is An ACTRESS!

JASMINE CURTIS-SMITH : THE TOAST OF PHILIPPINE MOVIES!

JASMINE CURTIS-SMITH : THE TOAST OF PHILIPPINE MOVIES!

Siblings of established stars often get into the grind because of their name and relation.  Very much like politics, showbiz is a suitable ground to spawn dynasties.  Maganda kasi ang nanay ; maganda kasi ang kapatid … kaya maganda rin kaya pag-ARTISTAHIN na yan! Is the adage which really depends if one has the talent and guts to swim into the unnatural waters of an industry that sells pipe dreams and sometimes flesh.  But, JASMINE CURTIS-SMITH is a cut of her own.  She must have nurtured her own dream of portraying other people and living their lives to the hilt in films.  Being Anne Curtis‘ baby sister , she has mindlessly [and beautifully] woven her way through the glitterati and the worked hard at every job she does.  Her early tv appearances showed much promise with the nuance she inflected upon characters; she simply and naturally gave her persona the ‘canvass’ blankness  to effortlessly settle into the being at hand.   She hit it big with Cinemalaya‘s TRANSIT [directed by HANNAH ESPIA, a brilliant new director and Cinemalaya winner] as she clutched the  Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Award for her role as a daughter  caught between cultures , vague choices and government policies.  This generation is just about to see more of JASMINE and for a time it is quite a sturdy pleasure to say that she will not just be the hottest actress but the toast of Philippine entertainment for the longest time.  Her TRANSIT is now our official entry to the OSCARS [Congratulations Director HANNAH ESPIA!] and without batting a crossy-eyelash ; we just might finally get our first Oscar Award for Best Foreign Film!  At the current  CineFilipino Film Festival [September 18-24], do catch Jasmine in her first horror outing in PUTI with Ian Veneracion.  Her coworkers are also all rooting for her since they love her so much for her humility, charm and spontaneity. Let us all expect a JASMINE CURTIS-SMITH SEASON and toast to every laurel she reaps and every role she further endears herself to us!

JUN-JUN QUINTANA : CINEMALAYA HUNK

JUN-JUN QUINTANA is 'Uno' in Edong Roy's 'QUICK CHANGE'

JUN-JUN QUINTANA is ‘Uno’ in Edong Roy’s ‘QUICK CHANGE’

When maverick filmmaker Eduardo Roy Jr. saw promising young actor Jun-Jun Quintana, he knew right away that he had his perfect Uno, the most important male character for his Cinemalaya New Breed entry about the life and loves of the transexuals and the transgenders, Quick Change.

“Jun-Jun is a perfect fit for the role,” enthused Roy adding,” and he delivered effortlessly.”

Patient and persevering in the crazy showbiz jungle, Jun-Jun Q’s acting potential was first noticed in Adolfo Alix’s Haruo, the Young Critics Circle Best Film of 2012. Critics wrote glowingly of Jun-Jun’s felt performance.

He also headlined CBN Asia’s Holy Week Drama Special for 700 Club for two consecutive years.

Recently, Jun-Jun played the lead role in the stage play Imbisibol, one of the more successful one-act plays of the Virgin Labfest at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Up for him is another lead role for the coming CinemaOne Originals Independent Film Festival in November and the green light has been turned on for his first ever soap opera, Hanggang Kailan Kita Mamahalin for ABS-CBN.

PAULO AVELINO : TWO FILMS, ONE FESTIVAL

PAULO AVELINO

PAULO AVELINO

It could not happen to a better actor [the least to a chance] to star in two films in a festival.  Well, sometimes it does and that sometime is this year’s CINEMALAYA Independent Film Festival where PAULO AVELINO is expected to generate excitement and anticipation as he topbills in Tarrog’s ‘SANA DATI’ and Yapan’s ‘DEBOSYON’.  Whispering waves echoing through the industry has it that he stands another great chance of winning an award for either… or both!  Undoubtedly, Avelino’s depth and expository thespian range is a hard nut to crack while lavishing on the boyish masculine charm it comes from.  This early? Yes, this early… CONGRATULATIONS PAULO! Luv Yah! Luv Yah? Yes, close kami noh???

The Passion That Drives RICHARD QUAN

RICHARD QUAN

RICHARD QUAN

The dictionary defines passion as an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. This is the force that drives character actor Richard Quan.  Since his first appearance as the other man in the Reyna Films’ classic Saan Ka Man Naroon? that starred the phenomenal love team of Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta, Quan, continues his love affair with show business, with this burning passion that fuels him to offer the finest in all the roles he portrays.

Film aficionados were most impressed with his performance as the tahong vendor father of JM de Guzman, in the Cinemalaya 2012 favorite Intoy Siyokoy.
Quan’s remarkable moment – caught his wife playing fire with another, he backed away quietly from the on-going transgression, crushed and disillusioned, this accidental discovery led to his plummet, a most tragic death that left his son Intoy orphaned.
This July, Richard is part of another Cinemalaya entry, “The Liars,” written by Senedy Que with multi-awarded film master Gil Portes as director.
The film is based on a real-life sports scandal that presents the incredible rise and the humiliating fall of an unprivileged Filipino baseball team of young boys in an international baseball competition in the 1990s.
“I play one of the fathers of the kids na part of the team who has no conscience,” Quan speaks of his role. “Wala siyang pakialam sa mga consequences of his actions.  All he wanted was the glory and the fame, and of course, the money that comes with it.”
“When the offered it to me, I was immediately attracted to the character because portraying a person who, as they say, belongs to the dark side is always challenging,” the actor quips. “Pag kinaiinisan at bwisit na bwisit ang mga audiences with my portrayal, it feels good. It is more fun and fulfilling, honestly.”
Richard adds, “I am very choosy with the films that I do, I always want them to say something, to impart lessons or at least, make people think, reflect. Dapat they inspire people to change.”
Other cast members are Jan Harley Hicana, Jim Rocky Tangco, John Michael Bonapos as the kids, with Alessandra de Rossi, Cris Villanueva, Victor Basa, and Arnold Reyes.
Another very important project that he involved with is “Ang Sugo,” the bio-film about Ka Felix Manalo, the founder and patriarch of Iglesia ni Cristo.
“It is work and a very big responsibility, that is how I see this project,” Richard states with a smile “I am very proud of this film.” Carrying on, “The whole process of creating a film, there is really no sure formula, kahit may ganoon ka kagandang script, mahusay anf artistic and production staff mo, the outcome, naiiba pa rin.  So, I’m hoping lang na everything will fall into place at magiging one of the best if not the best ang movie ito, and that the public, watches it.”
Richard ends. “In the nearest future I plan to produce. Whether it is a TCV show or a film, my motivation is, it’s not na pagkakakitaan ko lang siya but because, it is socially relevant, it is saying something. It is challenging the status quo. Dapat from the script pa lang, it will stir the passion. Up to this day, that passion in me, is my guide, it drives me to be part of good films and TV projects ”
“Liars,” under the direction of Gil Portes, is part of CINEMALAYA 2013,  July 26 to August 4, 2013 in CCP theaters, Trinoma, Greenbelt, and Alabang Town Center Cinemas.
