KRIS AQUINO : QUEEN OF KABALBALAN

MANILA, Philippines – “The queen takes on new challenges,” proudly declares “The Buzz” in line with Kris Aquno’s appointment as honorary patron for the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR).

But in her characteristic exuberance, Aquino blurted, “Feeling ko, nang dahil sa United Nations din, may makikilala ako! Honestly, don’t you think? Lahat ‘yan happens for a reason. Siguro meron tayong makikilala diyan na makaka-contribute sa kapayapaan ng buong mundo, at kapayapaan ng puso ko.”

“Bakit…” she wailed as laughter ensued.

Aquino sat with host Boy Abunda in an interview prior to the “Pinoy Got Talent” finals night, wherein they discussed the appointment, as well as other matters of importance like her family and love life.

Of her UN appointment, she clarified in the interview, aired on “The Buzz” on Oct. 23, “Okay, and pagka-explain sa atin ng sa UN, ‘yung si first class talaga ay si Angelina Jolie, because she’s been there for 10 years. So siya ‘yung ambassador talaga; the rest are patrons.”

But Aquino also immediately asserted, “Sabihin ko lang ha, na si PNoy had nothing to do with this appointment. Kasi merong iba mga nagiisip na in-appoint niya ‘yung sarili niyang kapatid. Nanggaling sa United Nations talaga ‘to, meaning, sa Switzerland mismo. Sila ang nag-pasya at alam mo na ang tagal-tagal ng prosesong pinagdaanan natin for this.”

Abunda concurred, noting that he and Aquino began talking about this in June 2010, after which they “heard nothing from them,” the latter noted, adding, “so tayong dalawa, nanahimik na lang…”

Abunda brought up the fact that part of the requirements for the appointment is having no political affiliations. Aquino replied, “Brining-up ko ‘yon, sinabi ko na with where my brother is at right now, imposible naman na hindi ka magpapakita ng political colors. Pero ang tinanong lang nila is that, ‘Do you have an intention to run in 2013?’”

Abunda then asked point-blank if she does have any intention to run for governor of Tarlac or senator, Aquino replied, “Inisip ko naman, imposible na hindi ko i-entertain ang thought ng pulitika sometime in the future. But sa 2013, categorical talaga because this appointment is two years.”

Aquino still seemed bent on her political aspirations, but she nonetheless continued, “I think hindi naman ito karangalan ko lang, kundi karangalan para sa buong bansa na ayaw kong maliitin. It begins here, ang simula dito ay those who are displaced by acts of war and acts of violence, and it is still happening in Mindanao. Sinabi nila na aayusin nila in the next month or so, makapunta ako, pipiliin nila ‘yung lugar. And sinabi ko with no hesitation whatsoever, gusto ko talaga pumunta.”

As Kris turns a new leaf, she pointed out, “Kung ano man ang libreng panahon meron ako, nakatutok talaga dun sa dalawang anak ko.”

It seemed talking about her love life is an irresistible topic for her, she immediately added, “Siguro ‘yun po ang pruweba sa inyong lahat na walang love life, dahil, para ‘yung anak ko na four years old sabihin, matutulog na kami, umuwi na kayo…” Apparently, during a meeting between Aquino, Abunda and an unnamed French UN visitor, her younger son Bimby urged their mother’s visitors that, as Aquino quoted the boy, “It’s time for you to go home, because we’re going to sleep na…”

Abunda took the cue and prodded more about Kris and her fear of falling in love again. “Yes,” she said when asked if she was afraid, “’Wag na ‘no, hindi naman ako sinuwerte talaga dun! Parang, naka-ilang strikes na ako. Hindi lang ako ang takot, kasi alam ko rin na takot ‘yung mga kapatid ko, lalo na ang ate ko.”

As for the continuing talks about the men in her life, Aquino said about Diether Ocampo, “Honestly I have not seen Diet for about a month. We stopped talking because nga—he knows this, I told him—hindi kumportable ang pamilya ko kasi sobrang gwapo ka.”

As for Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, “He’s my friend, that’s about it.”

During the interview, she also responded to issues about her not paying her proper taxes. “God, kung alam niyo lang po. Hindi ko maintindihan kung bakit nila ia-accuse ‘yan kasi kung mag-check sila, BIR makes it a public record talaga, ‘di ba? Tungkulin naman natin talaga ‘yan. Let my records speak for itself. Tinuro ng kapatid ko, 30% [of my earnings], automatic, is in a separate bank account and it goes straight to BIR.”

In parting, she gave Abunda some word of encouragement in light of the latter’s personal trials. “Lahat ng prayers ko parati, it’s for your strength. I know what it’s like to care for somebody you love very much. You need to be strong for the one who was always strong for you,” she said.

“Parati ko sinasabi rin sa’yo na kung anong panahon na ibinigay pa ng Diyos sa’yo na makasama si Nanay, ibigay mo naman sa kanya at ibalato mo ‘yon.” And to lighten the mood, she immediately added, “Kasi mayaman na tayo,” making Abunda laugh.
